Student prizes and bursaries

ESSA will offer up to 5 bursaries each worth €500 to PhD students, who are the principal author of an accepted paper.
In addition, all PhD students, who are prinicpal authors will be considered for a "Best Student Paper - ESSA 2012" award (350€) and the "Best Student Poster -ESSA 2012" (€150) at the conference.
Computational Modelling and Social Simulation refers comprehensively to current scientific paradigms – be it complexity, generative modelling, micro-macro duality, scaling problems, system theory, process dynamics, or heterogeneity, just to mention a few. Moreover, social simulation most often includes scientific stimulation reflecting on phenomena which reveal theoretical progress, epistemological challenges, and practical applications. As in previous years, ESSA 2012 conference invites researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including, among others, computer sciences, sociology, political sciences, psychology, anthropology, economics, or geography to participate in this annual event in order to share knowledge and experience in social simulation approaches.
Contributions dealing with theories and methodologies of computational modelling and simulation as well as empirical and experimental approaches concerned with contemporary issues in the social sciences are welcome. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

In addition, ESSA 2012 is going to discuss specific topics of social simulation related to the special interest groups’ themes of ESSA. For further information, see SIG’s.
ESSA 2012 offers three different types to submit a contribution: (1) full papers of 10 to 12 pages in length which should be comprehensive and detailed in presenting the theory, methodology and/or simulation results; (2) extended abstracts of 3 to 4 pages in length devoted to illustrate current work in progress which does not need to be fully elaborated yet; (3) posters which should visualise current problems/issues on which the author(s) is/are working.
Full paper presentations will be organised in plenary sessions, extended abstract presentations in parallel sessions, accordingly. Poster presentations will get a separate slot during the conference. ESSA would like to encourage young scientists explicitly to attend the conference by submitting a paper and poster, respectively. It is intended to organise a young scientist’s session in order to appreciate the work of our young(er) colleagues.
Important dates:
Paper proposals are expected by April 16th, 2012. All paper submissions (full paper and extended abstracts) will be reviewed by an international review panel. Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail by May 18th, 2012.
Posters are expected by August 15th, 2012.
Publication:
All accepted papers will be published in the series of the Department of Geography (including ISBN and dissemination to all German and Austrian University libraries). Selected papers referring to geographical/spatial issues of social simulation will be published in volume II of the Geosimulation series at LIT publisher. The general title of volume II is: “Modelling social phenomena in spatial context”
